High-level negotiations involving American, Russian, and Kyiv delegates commenced in the United Arab Emirates this week, marking the latest step in initiatives to achieve a ceasefire deal to resolve the protracted hostilities in the region.

The current talks come after prior negotiations in Switzerland where American and Kyiv officials revised a draft US framework for ending the war.

Moscow has so far not approved the latest draft of the plan and is unlikely to agree to many of the Ukrainian amendments.

Moscow’s top diplomat, the Russian diplomat, emphasized that any amended peace plan must embody the “essence and wording” of what was discussed during earlier summit talks between the two countries.

EU officials are reportedly struggling to stay engaged in the negotiations as American officials drive the efforts.

The Finnish leader, Alexander Stubb, who has emerged as a key contact between the US and EU officials, commented that the coming days would be decisive in attempts to reach a resolution.

He reportedly spoke with Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Nato officials, emphasizing that “The future of Ukraine is for Ukraine to decide, and European security is for Europe to decide.”

Meanwhile, the French president, the French official, warned against a peace deal that would represent a “concession” for the nation.

“The current proposal indicates what Moscow might find acceptable. But does this imply it should be endorsed by Ukraine and Europe? The answer is no,” he affirmed.

The US proposal was originally made up of 28 points and was drawn from discussions between American and Moscow representatives, with contributions from Kyiv defense officials.

Key aspects of the plan allegedly included:

• Ukraine surrendering territory currently occupied by Russia
• Further zones that might be required to be voluntarily surrendered
• Limits on the scale of the military forces
• Immunity for all parties in the war regarding violations

Latest Developments and Ongoing Difficulties

American representative reportedly went to Kyiv to brief the Ukrainian president on the proposal and press rapid approval.

The demand, combined with the disclosure of the proposal, reportedly shocked Kyiv and EU officials.

Zelenskyy stated that the country was facing one of the hardest moments in its history and was being forced to choose between “forfeiting self-respect or abandoning a crucial supporter.”

The US administration later softened its stance, indicating that the 28-point proposal was an “initial basis for negotiation” rather than a final demand.

As peace efforts continue, Russian forces has maintained its nightly assaults on Ukrainian cities.

Russian forces reportedly launched dozens of projectiles and many of drones at objectives in and around the capital, according to Ukrainian sources.

The Ukrainian president emphasized that Moscow must not feel it could prevail in the conflict while talks were ongoing.

“The priority is coordinated diplomatic movement among all partners, through shared endeavors. Sanctions and pressure on Moscow must yield outcomes,” he affirmed.

Kyiv’s leader confirmed that multiple people had been fatally injured in the overnight assault on the city.
