Antony Price, Celebrated for Creating Looks for Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer who crafted a series of unforgettable images associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, most notably the light-hued ensembles that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."
This news arrives less than a month after he debuted his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Pioneering Career
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he began designing clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to blend tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in designing body-hugging looks made him a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he started creating ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included a number of outfits for her tour of the United States following her marriage.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in collaboration with the design house 16Arlington.
- Architectural Forms: A hallmark of his work.
- Dramatic Impact: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
- Gender-Fluid Fashion: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
- Working with Stars and Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.
The industry mourns the loss to a true visionary whose legacy on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
