As Swimmers Fled Attack, Widely-Shared Photo Depicts Rescuer Running ‘Pedal to the Metal’ In the Direction of the Location.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong resident of Bondi, describes the iconic beach as her back yard. On that particular weekend night, she, along with numerous neighbors, heard loud noises reverberating across the suburb.

“Everyone did, but I considered it was still too bright and no one could see them,” Ching recounts. Exiting her home, she saw people “streaming up Bondi Road”. Their expressions she saw made it clear trouble had occurred.

As she stood on the road, speaking to a duo who had rushed up the hill still dripping wet, she became aware of someone coming up from behind. It was a lifeguard, sprinting in the direction of Bondi barefoot from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while carrying a defibrillator.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I just saw this streak in blue,” Ching describes. “He was zooming past. It was just him heading in the direction that the crowd was trying to flee, and hauling that big kit and barefoot … He moved towards something that surely every part of you would instruct you to run in the reverse way.

“Just no hesitation, but just completely full throttle running.”

An Iconic Image of Courage In the Wake of Chaos

The photo that Ching snapped of the lifeguard, since identified as Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as a prime example of moments of valour in the following of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, a fellow lifeguard, explained that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to support the other members at Bondi, as well as to work with other rescuers, officers and medical teams treating dozens of the injured.

Collective Outpouring and Assistance

Doolan’s story was part of a broader narrative to come out of the community, with the lifeguard clubhouse beside the scene of the incident transforming into a temporary hospital. Reports indicate that fellow lifeguards were also seen helping out, including entering the water to rescue people in distress.

After the attack, statements of appreciation were shared. One post expressed gratitude for the individuals who exhibited that “compassion will always conquer darkness”.

The team of rescuers published a communication, saying they were “coming to terms with what transpired”.

“Thank you all for your kind words and support. We are touched by the compassion directed at our responders,” the group stated. “When ready, we will recount our experiences in the belief that it supports those impacted.”

Council Recognition

Waverley council, the governing body that oversees many full-time beach safety officers, remarked that the team performed exceptionally from the moment the shooting commenced right into late that night.

“People have shared so many emotional stories, but the widely-circulated image of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help assist the injured is extraordinary,” commented a council representative.

“These individuals demonstrate dedication every day in ensuring our iconic shores safe for visitors, but what we saw on that evening should be commended.

“While we mourn and come to terms with the terror of this violent and horrific tragedy, I think it is important that we consider just how much light we have seen in the presence of such darkness.”
