Democrats Condemn Trump After He States They Should Face Execution
Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced fury after Donald Trump charged a group of Democratic representatives of being "turncoats" and stated they should be arrested and penalized "through capital punishment" following their release of a disputed video.
The Message That Triggered the Controversy
The recorded message, published on Tuesday, includes six Democratic congress members who previously acted in defense or defense roles.
"As we did, you all took an pledge to safeguard and uphold this founding document," the representatives stated in the 90-second video. "And right now, the dangers to our democratic foundation aren't just from overseas, but from right here at home. Our laws are explicit, you can reject improper directives, you can decline illegal orders, you should decline illegal orders. No one has to carry out commands that contravene the law or our founding principles."
Donald Trump's Incensed Reply
The clip seemed to trigger a furious reply from the ex-president.
On the following morning, Trump published on his social media platform: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another message, he declared: "This constitutes really bad, and Risky to our Country. Their words cannot be enabled to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third message, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also redistributed a comment that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Officials Respond
Following Trump's statements on that day, Top Democrats published a unified statement condemning the statements.
"Violent politics has no role in America," they stated. "Elected officials who participated in the video all acted our United States with great loyalty and distinction. We clearly censure Donald Trump's disgusting and harmful death threats against members of Congress, and appeal to House Republicans to forcefully do the same."
The Democratic leaders also said that they had been in touch with law enforcement "to ensure the protection of these members and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must immediately delete these extreme online messages and retract his aggressive rhetoric before he gets someone killed," the declaration added.
Officials' Defiant Response
The officials who participated in the video also published a response.
"We are veterans and defense specialists who care for this United States and made an vow to safeguard and defend the national charter of the United States," they stated. "That oath is permanent, and we plan to honor it. No threat, intimidation, or incitement will deter us from that sacred obligation."
"The significant point is that the former president deems it subject to penalty by death for us to reiterate the law," they continued. "Military personnel should recognize that we have their support as they fulfill their oath to the constitution and obligation to follow only lawful orders. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our duty."
They stated: "All citizens must come together and condemn the former president's calls for our murder and ideological conflict. This is a period for ethical certainty."
Additional Partisan Comments
The Opposition leader also denounced Trump's comments and published on social media: "Let's be crystal clear: the President of the United States is demanding the death of elected officials."
He added: "This constitutes an outright THREAT. Every Senator, each house member, all citizens – without partisan consideration – should condemn this without delay and unconditionally."
The Conservative official supported Trump's allegation that the Democrats had engaged in "treason", labeling the video as "highly unsuitable", stating: "This constitutes very risky, you have leading members of the legislature instructing military personnel to defy commands, I think that represents historic in American history."
The Conservative representative also according to sources told media outlets that in what he read of Trump's posts, Trump was "describing the violation of treason" but that "lawyers have to examine the language and decide all that."
Administration Reaction
During a executive branch meeting on later that day, when asked by a journalist, "Would the president want to execute congressional representatives?", the administration spokesperson replied: "Certainly not."
"It's important to note about what the former president is responding to," the representative stated. "You have current representatives of the American legislature who worked together to arrange a recorded statement to individuals of the national defense, to active duty service members encouraging them to disobey the commander in chief's legal commands."
She said: "The sanctity of our defense system depends on the chain of command, and if that system is broken, it can cause people getting killed, it can result in confusion, and that is exactly what these members of Congress ... are basically supporting."
