European Union Economic Leaders Convene to Discuss Accessing €140 Billion in Frozen Russian Assets for Kyiv Funding
European Union economic leaders are meeting in the EU capital this Thursday to address the union's economic priorities, including the increasingly urgent question of funding for Ukraine.
Ukraine's President States Nation's Survival Relies on Partners
Kyiv's leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared in a recent interview that Ukraine's existence depended on obtaining more funds from international partners.
“We trust, with luck, they will approve the necessary funding,” he stated to media outlets. If not, “We will have to find another solution, it’s a question of our surviving. That’s why it is essential urgently. And I count on our allies.”
European Authorities Pushes for €140 Billion Reparations Loan
The EU executive continues to aim to convince participating countries – including Belgium, that continues to bloc the proposal amid juridical concerns – to move ahead on a €140bn reparations loan based on Moscow's immobilized funds.
EU chief Ursula von der Leyen emphasized this morning that it would be “the most effective way to support Kyiv's military and its economy.”
Resolution Delayed Until Year-End Summit
A final decision on the matter has been postponed till the European Council meeting in December, with the funding needed early next year.
Discussions Occur Amid Corruption Scandal in Ukraine
But these discussions are happening during a difficult moment for Kyiv, as Zelenskyy had to move to contain growing public outrage in Ukraine over a corruption scandal in the power industry, firing two ministers allegedly involved in participating in a extensive bribery scheme.
Danish economic affairs minister Stephanie Lose was asked about her response to the allegations, and insisted that there was commitment to keep aiding Ukraine.
“Of course, Ukraine will have to persistently focus with improvements, reinforcing every sector of their society [and] including anti-corruption … but it is clear that there’s a strong European support behind Kyiv,” she said.
Other European Events Monitored
Separately, observers will be monitoring the Netherlands where the legislature convenes to discuss potential ways ahead in the government formation process, Rome-Tirana discussions in the Italian capital offering the most recent opportunity to enjoy the brilliant leadership interplay, and a series of top-tier meetings throughout the continent, including the Alliance's Mark Rutte’s trip to a German airbase.
Lots for us to cover.
