The acclaimed crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th season, confirmed by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-part series created by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, according to the production team.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the return, stating she was "so excited" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar added, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."

The previous series wrapped up in recent years with a finale that drew in more than 17 million audience members. Rumors about a new season have been widespread ever since, but confirmation only came recently.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

The seventh season begins with AC-12 no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by production details.

Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings remain working to tackle corruption within the law enforcement.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, the trio will take on their "most delicate case so far."

New Character and Complex Case

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer celebrated for takedowns of criminal networks, faces allegations of misusing his authority to act as a sexual predator.

Yet, this investigation might serve as a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still operating in the background, the teaser hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had so many fans watch the ups and downs of AC-12 over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a new installment."

He added: "Misconduct in the UK was thought to be over while the series was off air, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

The Scottish actor described being part of the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "Obviously I'm so excited the show is back! Eager to work with Jed, Compston and Dunbar again. The city, we'll see you soon!"

The veteran actor commented: "While anticipating the AC-12 return, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be working together next year."

"Pleased with the announcement and anticipating those unexpected plot developments."

Series Legacy

The drama premiered in the early 2010s and became one of the most popular TV dramas of the past ten years, featuring guest stars such as Thandiwe Newton.

Broadcasters haven't revealed exactly the new season will hit screens.

The conclusion of season six drew the extended plot about the search for kingpin known as "H" to a conclusion, and the creative team indicated at the time there were no plans for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the corporation confirmed on Tuesday that a new season is now in development.
