The distinctive yellow-fronted apartment block visible behind helped us locate the footage.
Our team is verifying images and video posted this morning that depict the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that detonated and that he later died to his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to check the location from which the images were from was based on posts saying the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex captured in the footage.
Identifying additional buildings, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed where the pictures were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
