Major US Panel to Cast Ballots on Modifying Infant Hepatitis B Vaccine Advisory
Following a postponement and a particularly heated gathering, a federal vaccine advisory panel was set to cast ballots on Friday on whether to change the longstanding recommendation that each baby be inoculated against hepatitis B.

The initial day of the assembly on Thursday was marked by heated debate over curbing eligibility to the hepatitis B vaccine for newborns and a decision to delay the ballot by a day to allow panelists additional time to examine the language. The committee, which guides the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on immunization practices, had put off the vote twice in the past.
“Is there any specific evidence of damage of giving this shot before 30 days? Or is this conjecture?” inquired one adviser.
In answer, another attendee stated, “There is limited evidence about the long-term risk.”

The injection is currently suggested for every newborn within 24 hours of delivery to halt contraction of hepatitis B, which can result in major damage to the liver. It has been provided to more than a billion persons for more than three decades.
