Weather experts have indicated a chilly commencement to the new year, with wintry precipitation likely over large parts of the UK. Those celebrating have been told to wrap up as near-freezing temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Celebrations Continue Amid Forecasts

The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay festivities are expected to go ahead, following last year's cancellation. This comes despite yellow warnings for snow across northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so warmer clothes will be needed," noted the national forecaster.

Displays Under Clear but Chilly Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is likely to be perfect for fireworks shows, with dry conditions and good visibility. Readings are forecast to be chilly, so warm wraps essential, as per forecasters.

Further north, skies will be cloudier, but this is not expected to hamper visibility for watching fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Widespread Advisories for New Year's Day

Moving into Friday, weather warnings have been issued for Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• Travelers should to leave additional time for trips on the road.
• Hold-ups and call-offs are anticipated on the transport network.

Temperatures Forecast to Fall Even More

With the start of 2026, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are set to plummet as wintry showers and strong winds are predicted to batter the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is forecast to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Health Warnings Activated

At the same time, amber-level health advisories have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to stay active until noon on 5 January, with readings forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency stated this signified the weather was expected to trigger major effects across health and social care services. This includes a potential rise in the fatality numbers among vulnerable individuals or those in the older age groups.
