Plans for Trump-Putin Talks Postponed Days After Budapest Negotiations Proposed
Currently exist "no preparations" for American leader President Trump to meet Russia's Putin "anytime soon", a administration representative has announced.
This past week Trump stated he and the Kremlin leader would hold talks in Budapest soon to examine the ongoing hostilities.
A planning session between US Secretary of State Secretary Rubio and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov was due to be held this week - but the administration said the two had had a "constructive" call and that a face-to-face session was no longer "required".
The administration withheld any more details on the reason the negotiations had been postponed.
Earlier Events
Trump had raised the possibility of a Hungarian meeting via telephone with Putin, a just prior to meeting Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office.
Certain accounts suggested his talks with Zelensky had been a "shouting match", with sources indicating Trump had pressured him to give up significant territories of Ukraine's east as part of a deal with Moscow.
Yet, on this week the American president endorsed a truce plan endorsed by Kyiv and EU officials to halt the conflict on the existing battle lines.
"Let it be cut the way it is," he remarked.
Moscow has consistently objected against pausing the current line of contact.
The Russian government was exclusively seeking "enduring stability", Lavrov said on this week, suggesting that pausing conflict would only amount to a temporary ceasefire.
Political Perspectives
The "root causes" of the conflict needed to be addressed, Lavrov stated, using Russian diplomatic language for a series of extensive requirements that encompass the acceptance of total Russian authority over the eastern region as well as the demilitarisation of the country – a unacceptable proposition for Ukraine and its EU supporters.
Zelensky stated talks regarding the front line were the "beginning of diplomacy" but that Russia was "taking all measures" to evade negotiations.
He additionally stated the sole subject that could make Moscow "pay attention" was that of the delivery of extended-range arms to Ukraine.
Weapons Discussions
The Russian president's unplanned conversation with the US leader last Thursday preceded rumors that the US was considering delivering distance-capable weapons to Ukrainian forces that could potentially strike Russian territory.
Zelensky said it was the Tomahawks issue that had pressured the Kremlin to engage in discussion. The conversation concerning the weapons systems had turned out to be a "strong investment" in international relations", he commented.
