In a clear message to the West, President Vladimir Putin stated to Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Russia stands ready to guarantee “uninterrupted” shipments of energy resources to India. The announcement came during a summit where both heads of state met in New Delhi and affirmed their bilateral ties were “immune to outside influence.”

A Signal Aimed at the West

Putin's comments, delivered Friday, was widely seen to be a direct challenge at western countries, who have tried to compel New Delhi into reducing its close links with Moscow. The backdrop follows previous American measures, such as the imposition of tariffs on India because of its buying of Russian oil.

“Russia is a dependable supplier of oil and gas and anything necessary for the development of India’s economy,” Putin said. “We are ready to persist in ensuring the uninterrupted delivery of energy for the booming Indian economy.”

The Indian leader, though he did not naming energy specifically, supported the focus by stating that “energy security has been a robust and vital pillar of the Indo-Russian alliance.”

Challenging American Pressure

In the lead-up to the summit, during a television interview, Putin had questioned US interference on India's dealings with Russia. The president questioned, “Should America has the right to buy our atomic materials, why shouldn’t India enjoy the identical right?”

Putin's arrival marked his initial trip to India since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, and the two nations made a clear attempt to project that the friendship between the men remained intact.

A Personal Welcome

Employing an rare gesture, the Indian PM welcomed directly Putin upon his arrival. Both leaders embraced warmly as close allies before having a private dinner the night before the summit.

Modi later described India's partnership with Russia as “a guiding star” and noted it was “founded on mutual respect and deep trust.”

Expanding Strategic Ties

The bilateral summit yielded multiple important deals regarding defence and trade relations. A major outcome was the signing of an economic cooperation programme aimed at 2030, which aims to double bilateral trade to $100bn annually by the target year.

The leaders also vowed to restructure their military partnership. Even as Russia remains India's biggest supplier of arms, the volume has reduced over the past decade as India aims to broaden its procurement.

The official release stressed plans for the co-development of sophisticated military systems, although direct details of purchases such as the Su-57 fighter jet were left out.

Overall, Russia and India restated that in the “ongoing challenging, tense, and unpredictable geopolitical situation, Russian-Indian ties stay strong to external pressure.”
