That Gory Cartoon Film Conclusion That Haunts Audiences
Out of all the adult-oriented cartoon movies I have ever viewed, no other has stuck with me as much as the fear-filled finale of a viscerally violent as well as overwhelingly transgressive film from 2022 The Unicorn Wars.
In 2015’s, this Spain-based writer-director crafted a dark, bleak and frequently brutal universe with several minor , forlorn glimmers of optimism.
Although The Unicorn Wars seems like it stemmed from an impulse to expand the medium further, the filmmaker clarified that it was actually an attempt to express a universal, multicultural message regarding “the common origin of each battle.”
This theme is conveyed via a band of vividly colored bears , openly based on a well-known line of cuddly characters.
Growing up in a culture built around aggression and the military-industrial complex, a lot of these animals are consumed by exterminating unicorns, due to a holy book which states the bears they previously were masters of the woodland, before these creatures drove them out.
A few haven’t fully bought into the brainwashing, , prefer to sample drugs and mate in the forest.
Unlike their friendly equivalents, these vivid animals show sexual organs and definite urges.
For a particular notably brutal, pessimistic creature, the character Bluey, the conflict with the unicorns transforms into a road to control — and particularly to dominance over his softer, kinder brother Tubby.
The character is a bully , an apparent psychopath , and when fear dominates his unit and takes his comrades sequentially, he seizes increasingly control personally, through ever more bloody, harmful methods.
At the same time, these mythical beings are experiencing their own nightmare, in the form of a spreading, deadly beast in their habitat.
“In the early stages, it feels like a humorous movie,” the director commented. “Yet it turns into a more serious and sad movie. And by the end, it’s a horror film.”
Unicorn Wars commences feeling a bit like among the playful movies from a renowned animator, that uncover a naughty glee in permitting cartoon characters swear, shoot each other, or engage sexually.
Afterward it becomes more akin to a bleaker movie by that same artist, with increasingly explicit brutality and a noticeable connection to the actual horror of conflict.
Ultimately, it is a full-on extreme drama massacre.
The horror that makes this a perfect Halloween movie begins much sooner than indicated.
The Unicorn Wars is ideal for the hardcore lovers of violence, for enthusiasts of extreme cinema who want to watch something they have not seen on-screen before, and who can handle a plot that pulls unflinching brutality.
See it in a dimly lit space with no disturbances, and that ending will crawl deep within you and linger.
