The Japanese Economy Declines as Overseas Sales Suffer by American Tariffs
The Japanese economic system has experienced a decline for the first time in a year and a half, mainly driven by declining overseas shipments because of recent US trade duties.
Group of Seven Economic Rankings
Japan stands as the first G7 country to report an economic contraction in the most recent three-month period.
As the United States yet to release its GDP figures for Q3 2025, the present G7 growth leaderboard indicate:
- France: 0.5 percent quarterly growth
- UK: +0.1%
- Canadian economy: 0.1 percent (preliminary figure)
- Germany: 0%
- Italian economy: 0%
- Japanese economy: negative 0.4 percent
Travel Shares Slump amid Political Rift with Beijing
In addition to the economic contraction, Japan is dealing with an growing diplomatic tension with China regarding Taiwan.
Stocks in Japan's travel and consumer companies have declined sharply after China advised its citizens to avoid traveling to Japan.
This action by Beijing intensified a diplomatic feud that was triggered by comments from Tokyo's new PM about the potential of sending forces in the event of a potential Chinese attack on Taiwan.
The situation led to a wave of selling across Japan's tourism-related shares.
- The Tokyo Disneyland operator shares fell by 5.7 percent
- The department store chain tumbled by 11.3 percent
- Japan Airlines declined by 3.75 percent
"The ongoing dispute over Taiwan and China's travel warning advising against travel to Japan introduces short-term headwinds for consumer-facing sectors.
"Tourists from China account for roughly 25 percent of Japan's international visitors, making department stores, high-end shopping, and hospitality especially at risk."
GDP Decline Details
Japanese GDP fell by 0.4 percent in the third quarter, as industrial exports were affected by tariffs levied by the US this year.
Exports were a major factor of the contraction, falling by 1.2 percent compared with the previous quarter, and were 4.5 percent lower than a the same period last year.
Earlier this year, the US administration had proposed Japan with a additional 25 percent tariff on its products, which was later lowered to 15 percent when the two nations concluded a trade deal.
Consumer spending also declined, by 0.3 percent compared to the previous quarter.
On an annual basis, Japan's GDP shrank by 1.8 percent in the three months through September.
"The Japanese economic situation was stable in the first half of this year and the latest GDP figures showed that momentum is halted for now.
I expect Japan's economy to be returning on a moderate recovery trend going forward."
The US administration has lately acknowledged the impact of tariffs on Americans, reducing duties on imported food products including meat, produce, coffee and fruits amid growing concerns about increasing costs.
