On his initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” New York City, promising “a different age” and an audacious commencement to his administration.

An Unprecedented Leader

The 34-year-old political star, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this is rare and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose grasp the levers of change,” Mamdani stated.

Defying advice to be modest, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will lead with courage and vision.”

Governing with Democratic Socialist Convictions

Mamdani openly embraced his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my principles for worry of being called extreme,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The ceremony was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over powerful interests.

A Costly Blueprint

Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• Subsidized daycare
• No-cost bus transit
• A rent freeze for about 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these programs may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the richest residents and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Challenges

The new mayor also faces apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly friendly.

The Basic Tests of Leadership

In the end, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing city upkeep: trash collection, reducing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and ensuring reliable transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with murders reported.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
