The Showrunner Reveals He Has a Plan for How His Sci-Fi Series Will End... For Now.

Vince Gilligan did not foresee that Pluribus would turn into a massive hit. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “I did not foresee the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”

With the first season of the popular series wrapping up—and a second season already in development—the creative team reflected on the audience reaction and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.

On the Incredible Fan Response

It would be easy to get swayed by the rampant praise and audience predictions about Pluribus. The creator is doing his best to ignore the noise.

“It feels like an endless supply of something incredibly sweet and being tickled to death,” he says. “It's the greatest thing, but I get wind of it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a deep trap I know I would get lost in and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”

Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.

“We make no attempt to change the plot,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not influenced by online forums.”

“It's wiser to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds.

The Central Mystery: Has the creator See the Finale of Pluribus?

Considering the creative staff are not listening by fan response, does it imply they have mapped out how Pluribus will finally conclude? Essentially yes… in a way.

“We have some interesting ideas about how the story could conclude,” he states. “yet we stand ready to discard a solid concept for a superior concept. This approach has served us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I imagine we will be doing that.”

Alternatively, if they hit a wall, Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to fall back on.

“I constantly suggest that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” he says humorously, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”

Alternatively, why not reference the classics?

“My dream is Carol to wake up in bed next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes.

Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV+.
